A dictionary definition of ‘miracle’ is: ‘an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God: a very amazing or unusual event, thing, or achievement’
For me, living in the first world, with constant exposure to computers, the second meaning, ‘a very amazing … thing, or achievement’ explains my seeing it as a miracle. I know that someone (probably a lot of someones), somewhere, understands the why and the how. But for me, with my limited knowledge and understanding, it is nothing short of a miracle.
Now, if I were to take this technology and place it in the middle of the under-developed third world, in a village that has seen little, if any, computer technology, I wager they would see it as ‘an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God’ whatever or whoever their God might be. Nothing short of a miracle to them as well!
Miracles happen everyday. Every time something occurs that I don’t understand, it is a miracle to me. That is not to say that someone else might very well look at the same event and say “Oh that happened because …..” The fact that someone else can explain the how and the why doesn’t make it less of a miracle for me. It was simply amazing!!!
As St Augustine is quoted as saying:”Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.”
Where have you seen miracles in your life lately?
