Raise
the strain of harvest home!
All
is safely gathered in’
Ere
the winter’s storms begin;
God
our Maker, doth provide
For
our wants to be supplied
Come
to God’s own temple, come;
Raise
the song of harvest home.”
So says the harvest hymn that was
written by Henry Alford in 1844 and will be sung in many of our churches this
coming Sunday as we celebrate “National Thanksgiving Day” here in Canada. 170 years after this hymn was
written we live in a very different world. No longer do we depend solely upon
the local harvests to feed us through the long winter. Our ‘wants’ have
probably never been better supplied then right now in Canada … but what about
the rest of the world? In thinking about what I’m really thankful
this year, my thoughts go to people
I'm thankful for people like Malala Yousafzai who after being shot by the Taliban, at the age of 13, for speaking out about the importance of education for all and especially for girls, continues to speak out after her recovery despite continued threats.
I'm thankful for the leadership of Desmond Tutu, a South African social rights activist who headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the fall of apartheid and today, in 2014 at 83 years, is still lending his voice to support causes he believes in.
With the deepening Ebola crisis in Africa, I'm thankful for Doctors Without Borders and all those nameless Medical-aid workers who went, and continue to go to West Africa to help the victims and their families.
I'm thankful for everyone, everywhere, who either speaks out or acts against aggression, who stands up for those in need, who are willing to risk their own lives for someone else. For all of these I am thankful.
What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving time?
Here is my tribute to all those people, known and unknown, alive and dead.
“Come
ye thankful people, come
Raise
the song of thankfulness!
Those
who sought to speak the truth
Putting
others before self;
Those
who spoke and lost the fight
Silenced
now and evermore;
Come
ye thankful people, come
Thank
them now and evermore!”
